Focus on Protecting Your Privacy This Week
It’s Choose Privacy Week. What are you doing to protect your social security number, bank accounts, or other personal information from prying eyes?
If you need some tips, check out our latest report. Digital Citizens Security Fellow Garth Bruen discusses threats to privacy both online and off. He also has some good advice on “how to best protect the information you consider most personal.”
What does he recommend? Here are a few steps you can take to safeguard your information:
• “Pay attention to the news and how it relates to your personal life in terms of which companies openly hand over your personal data.”
• “Read your credit card and phone bills in detail.”
• “Check your credit record regularly and ask your medical professionals how they protect your information.”
In the report Bruen also cautions against offering so much information on social media and being wary of any “free” service online.
As Bruen concludes, “if you want your information to remain private, you have to act in a way that preserves it as much as possible.”
That’s great advice to remember not only during Privacy Week, but all year long.
